New Zealand Nymph Fly Rod:

After a hike that felt like miles upon miles of walking you see a big Rainbow sitting under a riffle, you tie on a big Rubberlegs followed by your favorite Copper John pattern under an indicator. A big roll cast followed by a mend gets your indicator drifting down the bubble line. Just as you whisper to yourself “foam is home” your indicator dives toward the bottom. A strong hook set and the fight is on!

When it comes to nymph fishing, two important considerations should come to mind. First, a well-designed nymph rod should efficiently and effortlessly cast heavier nymph rigs. Secondly, the rod should be long enough to manage and mend your fly line to create a natural drift.

Our New Zealand 10′ #5 Nymph fly rod was designed specifically for nymph fishing. The extra length and adaptive action also makes for efficient roll casts, as well as single hand Spey casts. You’ll be able to hit those hard to reach slots and ledges where the big fish hide and drift your fly in a very lifelike fashion.

Add this rod to your quiver and you’ll be able to catch trout when your friends are fishlessly scratching their heads.

I got my 10’ 5 weight Leland New Zealand fly rod about a month ago and I have been able to use it on 3 excursions now and all I can say is WOW! I am more than impressed with this fly rod. The finish on the rod is absolutely beautiful. From the cork, the line guides, the thread wraps, the matte green finish of the rod blank, the rod identification engraved in the butt end down to the red aluminum ferrule plugs, this rod is beautifully crafted. As for the feel of the rod when casting, I have used mainly medium to medium fast rods for my 8 years of fly fishing, this rod seems to be a faster action rod. When lawn casting, I noticed that it throws fly line with authority. I was a little hesitant that I might lack “feel” when playing a fish, but in that regard, I am again impressed. I have used faster rods that feel like a broom stick when playing and landing a fish, but this rod has a wonderful feel when a fish is on. It has enough backbone to land a fish without tiring the fish out too much and enough suppleness to feel every head shake.
I primarily fish nymphs and I have done that mainly with my 9’ 5 weight Loop Opti Nymph rod that I purchased about 7 years ago from Leland – I have and still adore my Loop rod. Now having fished this 10’ nymphing rod, I am amazed at what one extra foot does for my nymph fishing! The extra foot has allowed me to reach softer water on the other side of a creek and get in a drift to pick up trout where I would not have been able to with my 9 foot Loop. I definitely see the advantage to the extra length.
The only critique I have of the rod is that the nut used to seat the reel could have been made a little larger to make it a little easier to seat the nut to lock down the reel – that being said, it does not detract from the experience of using this fly rod on bit.
I was on the fence about purchasing this rod for another five months and I am so glad that I took the leap to purchase this!
