Loop Cross S1 Flatsman 9ft 8wt Fly Rod, 890-4
On Loop’s saltwater testing grounds in Cuba, shots at twelve pound bonefish aren’t uncommon. And fish this size aren’t your standard run-reel-run-reel affair. They bulldog all the way to hand, and can make your average eight weight seem like a poorly timed joke. The challenge, in Loop’s eyes, was to design a bonefish rod that:
(1) remains stable when false casting 65 feet of line from the skiff’s bow, but
(2) can load up close for skinny water shots while wading, and
(3) has plenty of reserve power for keeping pissed off fish clear of mangrove roots and coral bombs.
For its part, the Loop Cross S1 890-4 Fly Rod is up to the task. This capable eight weight is truly progressive: it provides easy-flexing sensitivity when you need it, but fights mean when it’s time to roll the sleeves up.
