Spey, Double-hand, Switch...there are lots of terms used these days when describing the long rods. Finding a bigger reel for your two-handed fly rod shouldn't be your only consideration...as usual, there's more to the story. A two-handed fly rod is much longer than a standard, single-hand fly rod. Therefor, a Spey fly reel should have enough mass to counter-balance the lengthy fly rod. Next, most two-handed fly line system are rather bulky when compared to standard, single handed fly lines and require a fly reel with more space or capacity, allowing for not only the fly line to be stored, but ample backing, too. Finally, the right sized fly reel should visually compliment a larger two-handed fly rod. Too small a fly reel will look like a child's fly reel on a big boy fly rod. Below, we've lined up our favorite fly reels for two-handed fly fishing.
