What’s the word…?

The reason that we get caught out in the rain when we least expect it is that many of us, perhaps, tend to be optimistic. Or, maybe, we just don’t think ahead, at least as long as the sun’s shining! That’s where the Simms Gore-Tex Paclite Shell Jacket and Pants come in to play, because sometimes an unexpected storm can ruin your whole day, or for that matter, your whole week, And the usual reasons why we haven’t taken rainwear with us are mainly that most of it’s too heavy, too bulky, and doesn’t work that effectively anyway, even if we should remember to bring it along in the first place.

You’re not going to have any problems taking the Simms Gore-Tex Paclite Shell Jacket and Pants with you. Together, they weigh in at a svelte 28 ounces,on average, and both fold up neatly into their own self contained pockets. Make no mistake, though, because the Simms Paclite Shell is serious rainwear. Constructed with precision from the most packable waterproof, breathable, Gore-Tex fabric available, this outfit is big on performance in a small package. The Paclite Jacket and Pant is a natural first choice to take along when traveling, or fishing in the tropics. The highly breathable Paclite handles this high humidity environment better than any other rainwear. And often times, particularly on light aircraft in the tropical regions, we are strictly limited to how much baggage we can take. No problem there with the Paclite, and anyone who’s been subjected to a choppy two hour skiff ride in an afternoon storm can tell you just how cold the ‘tropics’ can be!

Rather than
think of the Paclite Shell as a “rainsuit’’, it can really do much more.I think a more proper term would be “all-weather”suit for traveling. As a thermal and wind barrier over other clothing, the Shell Jacket and Pants will keep you warm, even when it isn’t raining, and, once again, its high breathability makes it also ideal for sleet, snow and cold temperatures. For any type of backpacking, or off trail use, its lightness and compact design also make it a first choice.

Design and Materials

W. L. Gore, the pioneering manufacturers of Gore-tex fabrics , bestow their “Extreme Wet Weather Rating” only on those products that meet the highest standards of design and workmanship. The Simms Paclite Shell Jacket, at ¾ length, offers superior protection in a variety of outdoor situations, and offers greater coverage than shorter wading specific rain jackets. The protective storm hood when not in use stows conveniently out of the way in the zippered collar. This jacket sports the new YKK water resistant all-nylon zippers at the center, on the chest pocket and the two hand pockets, which eliminate the need for heavy, cumbersome plackets as would be required over all old fashion, non-waterproof zippers. The adjustable shock cord in the hem allows for a tight seal in extreme weather, or for shortening the jacket when wading deep.

The Simms Paclite Pant is
cut with articulated knee design for increased freedom of movement. The YKK water resistant side leg zippers travel 7/8 down the length of the pant for easy on-off over heavy boots or clothing. The elastic waist band has an adjustable nylon belt and the ankles are elasticized, as well, for a secure seal.

Company Profile … Warranty

Here’s what Simms says about their warranty;

“At Simms, we stand behind everything we make. If your Simms product fails due to workmanship or material defect during the life of the product, please return it to us for repair or replacement. This warranty does not cover damages caused by improper care, accidents or the natural breakdown of materials over extended use and time. All defective or damaged products should be returned to Simms for evaluation and will be repaired or replaced at the discretion of Simms Fishing Products.”

Simms was the pioneer
in the fly fishing world, creating the first waterproof/ breathable Gore-Tex waders in 1993. Since then, they have successfully grown to become the largest domestic supplier of waders, boots, and fly fishing clothing in the fly fishing industry. Simms is one of only three manufacturers worldwide licensed to make Gore-Tex waders, and the only one that does so in the United States. Simms’ staff is largely comprised of committed anglers and they’re located in the heart of trout country;Bozeman, Montana. In a continuing effort to improve their products, at any given time, Simms has two to three hundred prototypes being tested in the field by professional male and female fishing guides, and other outdoor professionals. I can’t think of many other manufacturers that are that dedicated to getting things right. Based on this success, so far, I would guess that Simms will be around to back their warranties for a long time.

Overall Rating; 4 Stars out of 5

Being in the outdoor biz, I own many quality shells, but the one I find myself using most often is the one that’s the lightest and most portable, hence, the most convenient and less likely to be left behind. When that lightness is combined with the functional quality features of this “Extreme Wet Weather Rating” Simms Paclite Shell, it’s a versatile combination that’s hard to beat.

Pros

Versatile, lightweight and compact Extreme Wet Weather rated rain suit can protect you in a variety of outdoor situations (jacket weighs only 16 oz.). Jacket and pants stow in self-contained stuff pockets. Gore-Tex Paclite Shell fabric is the highest performance waterproof/ breathable fabric available from Gore for light rainwear. Pants (12 oz.) have side zippers for easy on/off over footwear.

Cons

Lightweight fabrics and components won’t wear as long, or take as rugged abuse, as jackets and pants made with heavier Gore-Tex fabric laminates and bigger zippers.

Bottom Line

A high quality, highly functional set of all-weather gear that you’re likely to take with you when you need it due to its extreme packability and lightweight. ¾ length jacket is practical for boat fishing, travel, hiking, and camping, but can also be adjusted up for deep wading.
